A Junior member of parliament has admitted Zimbabwean minors were prepared to contract HIV/Aids by offering themselves to older se_x partners for as long as they were guaranteed of receiving money to buy food.
Leslie Tendayi, Junior MP for Mbare, made the startling admission Friday at the launch of Age of Consent, Access to Se_xual and Reproductive Health Care in Zimbabwe Justice for Children publication.
Zimbabwean lawmakers are at odds on whether to reduce the legal age of se_xual consent from 16 to 12.
To confirm some of the concerns, Tendayi admitted children as young as 12 were in fact, engaging in se_xual activity both among themselves and with older partners, adding, talk on se_xual and reproductive health issues must be cascaded to minors.
Among some of the reasons children were indulging in se_x, according to Tendayi, were those linked to survival in a country that has seen the worst forms of poverty and hunger.
“I can give you an example of a research that was done in Matapi Hostels in Mbare,” he said.
“Children, by the time they reach 16 years of age, they will be se_xually active.”
He added, “What is shocking in what they are saying is that it’s better to die of AIDS than hunger. So, this leads them into se_xual activities.
“They are saying it is better to die of AIDS because they know they can access ARVs than not access food.
“But is that the right thing we are teaching our children? We are saying that as children, we need protection from se_xual exploitation.
“We need protection from old men who are taking advantage of children, promising foods and promising them good things.”
The junior MP urged counselling to be made compulsory in local schools.
“Because we know that as children, we tend to experience a lot, a 16-year-old (boy) and a 15-year-old girl can have se_x, but after we have experimented, does it mean that we are guilty of any crime?
“So it is better to give guidance and counselling so that we may know the disadvantages of indulging in se_x at a young age.
“Even in schools, guidance and counselling must be made compulsory in terms of SRH education.
“You see a 14-year-old girl being expelled from school simply because she is pregnant.”
As children, Tendayi said, they faced a lot of struggles accessing condoms once intended to be delivered in schools but were nowhere to be found.
“We know that children are indulging in se_xual activities but if you are given the condoms, you can protect yourself from STIs.
“So it’s better to help them prevent these things because we know that most children are not abstaining from se_x.
“So isn’t it better to assist them so that they may not fall sick and also get pregnant or an STI. So it’s better to be se_xually active but protected.
“As children, we are saying that please give us these resources and protect us from se_x predators, adults as well.”

A Canadian man who was found guilty of murdering his nine-months pregnant wife did not face any charges in the death of their unborn baby this spring.
A judge sentenced Nicholas Baig, 27, of Pickering, to 17 years in prison Thursday for the murder of his pregnant wife, Arianna Goberdhan, according to the Toronto Sun.
Goberdhan’s family believes the punishment is too light, and now is petitioning the government for a law recognizing unborn babies as victims of violence.
According to the report, Goberdhan was just 20 days from her due date when Baig stabbed her 17 times on April 7, 2017. Both she and her unborn daughter, Asaara, died as a result.
“Asaara and other pre-born children in similar circumstances deserve to be recognized as victims of a crime and should be entitled to justice and legal recourse,” Goberdhan’s family said in the petition. It has more than 4,700 signatures so far.
They urged the Canadian Parliament to pass a law recognizing that unborn babies who are victims of homicide also deserve justice under the law.

Here’s more from the report:
Goberdhan and Baig married in November 2016 after she learned about her pregnancy. But three months later, the 26-year-old bank employee left Baig and moved back with her parents.
Their troubled relationship was reflected in his “vile text messages,” the judge said. Baig had called his pregnant wife “a skank,” a “lying b—-,” and a “dumb, f—— slut.”
“He said, ‘You’re dead to me, you won’t rise from no ashes,’” [Ontario Superior Court Justice Jocelyn Speyer] added.
“He went on to write: ‘You’re a lying w—- and I hope you die delivering. I’ve never wished death on anyone before.”
The attack occurred on the evening of April 7, 2017, after Goberdhan went to visit Baig at his home, according to court testimony. Shortly before 10 p.m., authorities said they received a 911 call from her phone where they heard her begging to go. They said someone hung up the phone, so they called back and heard Goberdhan screaming. They said she told them she needed the police, and then the phone was disconnected again.
Police said Baig stabbed Goberdhan 17 times in the torso, head, neck and arm, and then left her and her unborn baby alone and bleeding. Paramedics said they arrived too late to save the mother or her unborn baby.
Abortion activists routinely oppose such laws because they do not like that the laws recognize the humanity of the unborn child. In January, pro-abortion lawmakers in New York repealed their state fetal homicide law. Just a few weeks later, a pregnant woman was stabbed to death in the state. The legislature’s action forced authorities to revoke the charges that her attacker would have faced for her unborn baby’s death.
