U.S military sends ‘tough’ message to Al-Shabaab
The United States African Command has sent an uncompromising message to Somalia-based terrorist group Al-Shabaab.
In a strongly-worded statement, it said that there would be no let up in strikes aimed at degrading the group’s ability to spread terror and stage attacks.
“Alongside our Somali and international partners, we are committed to preventing al-Shabaab from taking advantage of safe havens from which they can build capacity and attack the people of Somalia. In particular, the group uses portions of southern and central Somalia to plot and direct terror attacks, steal humanitarian aid, extort the local populace to fund its operations, and shelter radical terrorists. The desired end is one in which terrorist organizations cannot destabilize Somalia and its neighbouring states, nor threaten the interests of the U.S and its international allies in the region,” the statement partly read.
This comes in the wake of air strikes which took out an estimated thirty-seven Al-Shabaab militants.
The group continues to suffer huge military reversals through targeted strikes carried out by the United States and AFRICOM forces.
